Smart Ones

There are no warm words to describe him.
First one awake.
In the freezer aisle
His mother tells him to pick his favorite Smart Ones.

Little red
Boxes drop into the cart.
Next to notebooks,
Folders,
Coloring pencils etc.

They wonder
If they will last.

I recently learned
What it means to cook for one
And why I love cooking for you
My reader.
My Smart One.

Tell me what you like to eat
Because I love you.
Picking your favorite books
He stands on his tip toes at night
Peering into that small,
Dirty white fridge you are too familiar with.
